Old Ashby Road area

Booth Wood and the Burleigh Way

This is an area badly need of protection and care. The Charnwood Wildlife have devised a management plan to achieve this which has not received universal agreement. The bluebells are however about to bloom whilst serious threats still exist from people causing criminal damage. This threat extends to Burleigh College playing fields. The Neighbourhood Watch Group has been extremely effective in reporting incidents and ensuring action. In Juy 2020, together with Cllr Paul Boldrin and other residents I have submitted a Report to Charnwood identifying works that we feel need immediate attention. Booth Wood

The Old Railway Line, also known as Burleigh Way

This is another area which concerns me. It is a well used path and a sensitive area which needs careful natural management.
We have now achieved a better (not perfect) cleansing regime but now we are faced with ever higher growing hawthorn. This will have to be cut sometime, perhaps layered, causing a drastic, though temporary, change in outlook.

In the longer term the Borough has this marked out in the Borough Local Plan as a cycle route from Pitsford Drive all the way to town. Before this happens I have called for the fullest consultation. Whether the surface is gravel or tarmac, lit or unlit and how it is maintained are all important questions.

Local Shops and Services

Besides the SPAR and hairdressers, we have a Post Office, Pharmacy and further shops at Hermitage Road. After previous closures of chemists and post officres, not to mention butchers and bakers, I'm very keen for these shops to thrive. To a large extent its in our hands. Using local shops helps them help us and is also a greener alternative than going out in the car!

Old Ashby Road traffic

The Old Ashby Road received some modest traffic calming several years ago to slow traffic as it emerges from the motorway and as it travels past the schools. Since then there have been further modifications on Thorpe Hill. The safety of this area is one of my greatest concerns. We need to limit traffic using the route through Thorpe Hill if possible and make the environment safe for everyone.
During the Coronovirus emergency I have ensure the 20mph warnings are improved to make it as easy as possible for pedestrians. I speak with the Headteacher of Booth Wood County Primary School when appropriate and enjoy good relations with the school and secondary shools on Thorpe Hill.
